ICT integration in West and Central African education: case studies of pioneer schools

Mr. Kofi Boadi Ayim Boakey graduated with a Masters in development studies from the University of Cape Coast in Ghana in 2001, where he played a leading role in student politics as President of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana. He also has a Bachelor’s of Education degree in Psychology from the same institution and a diploma in personal computer repair from Harcourt Learning Direct (USA). From 1995 to 1997 he was Assistant Director of the Computer Literacy Club at the University of Cape Coast; from 1997 to 2002 he was associate editor of IFE Psychologia (an international journal) and researcher and computer data analyst for DEEDS Consult in Accra. As a researcher, he is particularly interested in the role of the computer in developing education and research. He participated in the USAID QUIPS (Quality Improvement in Primary Schools) Programme, conducted baseline studies and project evaluations, reviewed project proposals and wrote research reports. He also has experience in ICT training, systems administration, database management and hardware and software troubleshooting. He participated in the March 2003 workshop in Bamako to conceptualise this current research project. Mr. Boakey speaks English, Akan, and French. He, like the other members of the national ICT research team, is a member of ERNWACA-Ghana.

Ms. Dzigbodi Ama Banini obtained, from the University of Ghana, a Masters in population studies in 2000 and a Bachelor’s degree in economics and sociology and a diploma in education sciences in 1979. Currently she is assistant to head of administration at Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters in Accra. She was lead researcher for the review of literature from 1991-2002 on the quality of education in Ghana for ERNWACA and ADEA. She has also researched and written on the causes of poor performance of students in rural schools in Ghana, adolescent sexuality and reproductive health, moral decadence among Ghanaian youth, and teaching of economics. She taught education, economics, geography and life skills from 1979 through 1999 in colleges and secondary schools in Ghana and a technical school in Nigeria.

Mr. Asiegbor Koku Isaac is an agricultural specialist, involved in planning, monitoring and evaluating projects. He is skilled in research, evaluation, data analysis and report writing, particularly on girls’ education issues and basic education. He participed in many national development projects on agriculture and education, as principal or assistant researcher, e.g. project on "rights and equity in the classroom: a case study of classroom interactions in basic schools in Ghana," a study commissioned by UNICEF, Ghana 2002.
